Salem's Lot 1st Printing

Post by JackyBoy »

Hey Guys,

Just curious if anyone knows the breakdown on the Salem's Lot first printings? I know that three different states exist, but does anyone know roughly how the 20,000 copies are broken down between the three states? Just a rough idea would be nice to know, if possible.

Thanks!

Hi josh,

Good question - so the difference is in the dust jackets only. The book block itself is a single first edition. Really the question is how do the dust jackets break down.

The first and second states of the dustjacket are the same DJ....it's just that Doubleday took all the "first states", price clipped them and re-printed $7.95 on it.
The third state has the text corrected to refer to Father Callahan.

On the 1st edition page if you check the embedded video there's a nice talk about the dustjackets at just under a minute into the video, for some more in depth info on the states and quantities of the first state.

I don't have info on 2nd vs 3rd state breakdowns directly but if you look at tdt.org page they indicate it's 7,500 3rd state editions....if I do the math that would mean 12,500 1st/2nd states (which, again, are the same DJ).
