I don't know if I'm being put on here or not but a woman posted(FB SK page) a picture of a huge pile of SK books she got a garage sale or something and was asking what we all thought they were worth. I asked her if any of the early books has prices on the inside of the jacket.
Just Salem's Lot she says.
"How much," I ask
"$8.95" she says.
I ask her what she finds on the inside of page 439
"Q37" she says.
"How is the priest referred to on the inside jacket?"
"Father Cody."
Is it possible?

It would be possible, but I'd ask for pictures. Also, make sure it says First Edition on the copyright page. Miracles DO happen.

I'm waiting for pictures. Didn't think to ask about the 1st edition. Is it possible? would it then be a 1st State DJ but later printing book?jhanic wrote:It would be possible, but I'd ask for pictures. Also, make sure it says First Edition on the copyright page. Miracles DO happen.

For info: The first state DJs were never put on books. They were found much later, in a filing cabinet.

Re: Salem's Lot
Super interesting...... let us know how it turns out.
My working life has been around the printing industry. With todays computers and copiers one could fool a lot of people with a reproduction with very little money. Just saying.

So the lady has given the book to her father-in-law who is taking it to a friend who is a book dealer. I don't know any of these people, nor do I know the lady. The f-i-l thought the book was in too mint of condition to be old. The challenge I'm having here is, if someone was going to go to the length to forge a copy of this thing, why would it just be stuffed into a pile of SK books (42 of them) and sold for $50 (whole pile) at a garage sale?
Is anyone aware of any subsequent copies of the book that were $8.95, Q 37 w/ the Father Cody Typo?

Well damn!! I've never seen that before. How would I be able to distinguish it from an original?
Of course the book would still likely be genuine but obviously the value would be insignificant in comparison.

Wait - I see below the description on the inside jacket it says Facsimile Dust Jacket.
I'll have her check.

Re: Salem's Lot
This story comes to an end without the happy ending.
The jacket is exactly as suggested - one of the facsimiles.
The book is still a 1st edition though.
Any idea of the value w/ the fake jacket?
Anyone?
It's in mint shape.
