Your “other” favorite author

Post by JGeis » Thu Jun 11, 2020 4:11 pm

So, I’m sure that for most forum members here, King is your favorite author, but who are the other authors you most enjoy?

Myself, I’m not very well read on King thus far. I read Cycle of the Werewolf, IT, and The Dark Half long ago when I was pretty young. I enjoyed the first two, though I was a bit disappointed by the ending of IT. Then I read the Dark Half when it was released and I did not care for it much at all.

So, thirty years later, I decided to give him another shot. I recently read The Shining and Sleeping Beauties and now I am nearly through The Gunslinger.

I greatly enjoyed the Shining. I liked Sleeping Beauties well enough, though I felt the middle portion could have been 100 pages or so shorter. So far, I’m loving the Gunslinger, though, I think Salem’s Lot will be next before moving on to Drawing of the Three.

All of that is my long precursor to saying, the authors I’ve been spending more of my time on over the years are:

Robert E Howard
Gene Wolfe
Steven Erikson
Joe R Lansdale
HP Lovecraft
Clark Ashton Smith
Edgar Allen Poe
Karl Edward Wagner
Fritz Leiber
And a host of others to a lesser degree :)

What a fun question! Some of mine fall squarely in more of a YA genre but those were some formative years for me and I still love going back and reading some of these - usually with my kids now, but I'm not ashamed to say I'd re-read them by myself. This isn't a comprehensive list just what comes to mind at the moment.

I'm also going to put a book or series I associate with that author for those that might be interested in checking them out.

I'm leaving out some of the authors who I enjoy reading but are probably known more for their movie adaptations then their books by most folks (Tolkien, Collins, Rowling, etc)

Isaac Asimov - (Robot Series)
Hugh Howey - (Silo Series)
John D. Fitzgerald (The Great Brain series)
Robert Arthur - (The Three Investigator series)
Joe Denver - (Lone Wolf series)
John Christopher (Tripods Trilogy)
Philip K. Dick (Man in the High Castle)
Joan Lowery Nixon (Orphan Train adventures)

Nice! I’m quite a fan of PKD as well and have been meaning to get more into Asimov but haven’t done so thus far.
