I have both 1st editions but not sure witch is the rarest? One has a 16.99 price & the illustration is between pages 432 & 433 (the same as the Xmas gift edition) The other has 17.99 price and the illustration is between 448 & 449. George Beahm claims there is a variationin in the cover art. Anyone spot it? I sure don't! HAPPY BIRTHDAY MR KING! Ain't collecting fun?

The rarer one has a price of £15.99 with the picture facing page 448. The more common has a price of £16.99 and the picture facing page 433. I've never been able to distinguish any differences between the art of the two dust jackets. I also have both.

The story I heard was that a few of the £15.99 copies were shipped, then the publisher decided that the price should have been £16.99, so the ones with £15.99 were recalled and replaced with the £16.99 ones. Of course, this story doesn't explain the difference in the positioning of the illustration.

I never knew there were two "1st British editions". That can't be possible, can it? One has to be first and the other the second (unless both were printed simultaneously?) The price on mine is 15.99 (pounds), the illustration is between pages 448 and 449, and the title page states "First published in Great Britain 1993". Can you post pics of your two copies?

The books are identical except for the dj price and the placement of the picture. It's usually considered that the £15.99 one is the "First state" and the £16.99 is the "Second state".

I was looking at my King books and realized I do have both of these states. I also found a note from a book catalog, which I will retype below (using an 'L' for the pounds symbol):

254 KING: Nightmares & Dreamscapes. Hodder. 1993
1st (and 1st state binding) The illustration for 'The
House on Maple Street' in this edition appears facing
p. 448 and the dj price shows L15.99. This edition
preceded the final published edition, in which the
illustration appears (correctly) facing p. 433 and the
dj price is L16.99. A few hundred copies of the first
binding state escaped into the 'export market' (ie.
Australia & S. Africa etc), sent out several months
before the official UK publication date; the rest were
withdrawn and pulped, prior to publication, when the
pagination error was noticed. Fine in dj. L50

The only difference I can see between the two jackets is that the 'earlier' one seems to have more of a green tinge to it. But that could be attributed to the printing process.

The DJ on my copies are exactly the same apart from the price. The colours are identical.

Hi All
I picked up a copy of the first state today, with the £15.99 priced DJ etc, in fine unread condition at a charity shop for £1.25 GBP, never thought I would ever find this one. If it is as rare as stated ie: only a few hundred copies escaped being pulped, what value does it have as oposed to the common £16.99 edition, any ideas ?
