The Wastelands Viking edition

Post by Jrod1822 »

I own all of the Viking reprints of the first four Dark Tower books. The copy of the Waste Lands that I purchased says Viking on the spine and on the book jacket but on the copyright page it says it was published by Plume. It does say that it was printed in 2003 simultaneously with a Viking edition or something along those lines. I realize Plume and Viking were both part of Penguin Publishing but I was just curious if the copy I purchased is less desirable than one by Viking. It looks identical and again even has Viking on the spine and dust jacket. I thought that was strange and couldn't find anything on the net about it. Any knowledge on this would be appreciated. Thanks

Can you post a photo? I think that would help quite a bit.

Here are some pictures. Also there is no price on the inside of the dust jacket. Were there book club editions of these?

Yes, there were book club editions. Yours, by the number line, is a second printing.

Sorry to bump an old post, but I'd be interested to know if anyone had any more info on the reprints (or Book Club editions) of 2003 Viking Dark Tower hardcovers.

OP shows that his copyright page reads "Plume (new edition), July 2003" and says that the dust jacket inner flap doesn't have a price. Does anyone know if Plume was the publisher for the Book Club or if there were multiple publishers?

I have a similar copy where the dust jacket doesn't have a price, but the copyright page on my copy doesn't say anything about Plume and looks like the Viking copies that did have the dust jacket price.

I'm wondering if maybe I got a copy that was NOT a Book Club, but someone switched out dust jackets for whatever reason.

Appreciate it.

Yeah the copyright pages seem quite different.

In the original post, the CP looks to be Plume specific/primary (even though the boards in the photo show Viking as the publisher).

In your photo, the CP looks to be Viking specific/primary.

Your copy is what I'd normally expect to see, as the Plume copies are usually paperback. That original CP even says "Published by Plume......Simultaneously published in a Viking HARDCOVER edition" The original CP almost seems like it doesn't go with the book.

Once we get to later and BC printings though, I just don't follow those all that closely because from a collecting standpoint, whether it's:

a) A later trade edition print with BCE DJ put on it
or
b) A BCE edition

It wouldn't really be sought after. From a $$$ perspective, A or B, would only be worth a few dollars at your local bookstore.
