Book Club First Edition?

Post by Scotty661 »

I am new to the forum, but an avid collector.

Why are Book Club Editions not considered true first editions? i have accumulated quite a few BCE.

Does a price on the dust jacket appear on all First Editions?

I have been buying hard covers from a local used book shop. They stamp their name on the first page inside the cover. Does this drop the value of the true First editions?

It is my understanding that the main issue with BCE is that they don’t normally have any way to tell what printing they are 1st or 11th. Collectors are looking for 1st edition and 1st printing so with no way to tell what printing the BCE is one would have to assume it is not a 1st printing.

True 1st/1st must have not only a price but the correct price. It is not uncommon to find a BCE or later printing DJ on an otherwise 1st edition book. Not having the correct DJ lowers the price substantially, some say 50% or more of the books value is in the DJ.

Store stamps, name plates, written names, etc. all lower the value of a book.

There were 2 books that are book clubs, but were the only editions making them sort of 1st/1sts, they were hardcovers. "Secret Window" and "Storm of the Century."
