Price clipped vs. non price clipped

Excuse my ignorance and if this question is somewhere else I do apologize. How much does price clipping affect the price of a 1st edition? Why are books price clipped to begin with? Have an opportunity to buy a Stand 1st edition in very good condition for $225.00. Wondering if this is a good price.

IMO a price clipped dust jacket reduces the value by 95%.

I would never have one in my collection.

Hi Bob,

I also avoid price clipped books and I would value them about the same as a BOM. To answer your question about why they are clipped it is my understanding that books stores would clip the price once the book was put on clearance. There may other reasons but that is what I have always gone with.

I don't have any price clipped books in my collection, in my opinion (and personally) having a clipped price (to me) is worse than having a damaged DJ. For example if i had a choice between a 1st Carrie (just stating mine is not clipped and in a very good jacket) with a very good jacket not price clipped but with a bit of age showing, and a very fine one with no marks at all BUT price clipped, i would go for the former as a jacket with a bit of wear is still complete, one clipped is not and that's what would bug me.

Significant devaluation but not always 95%, but I'd agree UP TO 95%

You still have a 1st edition book that can be verified, and if the copy is a clean, tight copy that's worth something over a BC edition You can occasionally find a DJ on the secondary market and pair it with your 1st edition copy - which is something that would not be possible with a BC edition

What I heard on the price clipping when I was a kid was that people used to price clip the DJ's so when they gave the book as a gift the recipient wouldn't know how much they spent on it...Of course that opened then the door for some shady folks to take BC dustjackets and cut them where the price would have been & pass them off as 1st editions.

And as Tomas just mentioned, that's why I'd never want one. I'd always have this doubt that the dust jacket was not a true first edition jacket.

As with all things in life, there are always exceptions to the rule. In this case it's SK's 'salem's Lot. The price clipped 2nd state is worth more than the unclipped 3rd state. (Both of which are worth a huge amount less than the unclipped 1st state, but good luck finding one of those...)

The 3rd state is harder to find than the 2nd state. ABE and eBay always have lots of 2nd state copies for sale, but hardly ever have 3rd state.

But yes, the 2nd state is worth more.
