Advance Copies of The Shining (1977 Version)
So I've been talking to a book seller about an "Advance Copy" of The Shining. I believe it is the hardback Doubleday version, if one even exists. Can anyone give me a little background info on this? How about market price?

Doubleday used to send out Advance Copies to reviewers. They had a red card enclosed with the book details typed on it.

Thanks, Mr. Rabbit Trick. Do you happen to know if those Advance Copies were sent sealed? The gentleman I'm speaking with says his "Advance" copy is sealed.

Does this relate?
Last week I bought an unread first-first of Carrie. The inside front cover is stamped in the Doubleday font.
With Compliments of
Doubleday & Company Inc
The seller had called Doubleday to see if they can englighten. They did.
In 1974 to promote books they would mail these to bookstores, radio stations and school library's. Looking for exposure. If I was home I would attach a pic.
Good luck with your Shining

Wow! That is quite a find you have. Awesome and kudos to you! Unfortunately, I haven't been able to see any pics of the book yet, so I'm hesitant to make a move. But it might be worth a gamble...
Thanks for the feedback, TrueNorth.

I don't think any Doublrday books were ever sealed.OneFathom wrote:Thanks, Mr. Rabbit Trick. Do you happen to know if those Advance Copies were sent sealed? The gentleman I'm speaking with says his "Advance" copy is sealed.
How would the seller know its an Advance Copy if it is sealed?

Here are a couple shots of the inside pages. The stamp is on the back of the frontboard cover. The black endpapers are different and make it difficult to see the stamp. I am not sure if this stamp adds to or takes away from the value. What do you think?OneFathom wrote:Wow! That is quite a find you have. Awesome and kudos to you! Thanks for the pics, TN. For me, I think the stamp enhances your book with the exclusivity of the stamp, and all. How'd you come across it?
And...The Rabbit Trick...I ended up buying the book. I'll just return it if ends being a BCE, which is my suspicion. Never know unless you try so try is what I did.

If the photos you show are accurate, that IS an advance copy. Also, the one photo shows a price on the dust jacket. BC editions did not have a price on them. I would check the other indicators of a first edition, too.

OneFathom & John,
I have no doubt this is one trippy little book. SK's first novel in an advanced promo copy plus in unread condition. I found it on ebay, after emailing and phone calls we made a deal and he delivered it in person a week ago today.
It has the right stuff P6 on page 199 and the DJ is marked $5.95.
