One more question. Is there anything a seller can do when they are dealing with a nonpaying bidder. I dont sell alot on ebay, usually only during the holidays to get some money for christmas gifts for the wife and family. thanks in advance.
I can't really help you here--I don't sell on ebay. I think there's a procedure through ebay that you can report a non-paying bidder, though.

Friday afternoon (Dec 11) stock was listed as 10+. I placed an order and got a confrimation of shipping on Saturday.
on saturday I've got an order confirmation and after a while an email with the order cancellation (no details about the reason but 99% it was cancelled because it sold out). Tried again and got the same result

I just checked and my credit card has been charged, so I guess I'll just have to keep my fingers crossed...

Well, mine arrived yesterday in pretty-much the same, piss-poor, awful, atrocious, inept, and incompetent packaging, with one end practically open for anyone to reach in and grab it. No buffering material was included, not even a few Styrofoam peanuts. However, it is undamaged, which is a MAJOR MAJOR MIRACLE given the utterly ghastly way in which it was shipped. I wouldn't trust mailing a package a few houses down in the way this came, much less clear across the Atlantic.

Is there someone to whom we can write that will actually give a damn about this sorry state of affairs? Would King's agent or publicist care at all?

BTW, as of Thursday, December 17 @ 5:00pm EST, Waterstone's >still< has this listed as available. Just WTF is going on over there?

(Yeah, I'm a little angry.)

I'd expect nothing else from The Angry Book Collector
Ah, seriously though I feel your pain.

Oh and the prototype case finally arrived; I understand the mechanism anyway and that part should work just fine. So I should be opening up pre-orders next week. With delivery in very late January or early February.

Of course a full annoucement, complete with newsletter will come out with full details and order link... you won't miss it :)

For what it's worth, I certainly won't be going anywhere near Waterstones for any kind of mail order deal, whatever they offer. Might be worth writing to them and mentioning the amount of bad publicity they've generated for themselves, fleggett.
As for the slipcase, great news, Tomas. I'll be putting my name down as soon as you're ready.

BTW, my UK trade edition of UtD arrived in even WORSE shape. It was so bad that the USPS actually had to put it in a trashbag for fear the contents would fall out.

And to add insult to injury, the book wasn't shrinkwrapped, so the dustjacket is very frayed at one end (the top).

AAARRGGHH! Money wasted...money wasted...

On the plus side, the trade is actually fairly well constructed. The boards are heavy. Smythe sewn. Pages are competently white and of decent stock to reduce translucency. Special endpapers using a blue spot color. Spine screening (no stamping, though).

Unfortunately, my copy arrived with a lot of dog-eared pages towards the back. Since I'm assuming these were never shrinkwrapped, I can only surmise this happened either during "handling" or was the result of the lousy, lousy, lousy, LOUSY pack job.

Waterstone's.... Someone needs to ram a clue up their rectums.

I ordered my UK trade edition from a bookseller at Abebooks. Hasn't arrived yet but I will let you know what shape it is in when it does and the name of the bookseller. It's probably worth the few extra dollars it cost to get the book in brand new shape. I am also looking for a British book dealer to order trade paperbacks and paperbacks from, but still no luck. I guess the UK trade paperback of UTD is already in multiple printings, so the first state is going to be difficult to find now.
I just received the UK 500 copy JUST AFTER SUNSET the same way (Abebooks) and it arrived in perfect condition.

I ordered my copy of the UK trade Under the Dome from Amazon and it came in perfect condition. I did, however, have a problem with the UK trade of Just After Sunset that I ordered when it first came out. The dust jacket was really messed up. I complained and they sent me another copy. They said to keep the first because the cost of sending it back would have been prohibitive. I donated it to my local VA hospital.

i had ordered my uk s/l on christmas morning and recieved it a few days ago in perfect shape except for some ripped shrinkwrap. the box had some air bubbles and seemed to be packaged well seems waterstones had listened to all the complaints they recieved from previous customers. i was also a pleased after opening the book up and finding out i was the proud owner of #23.

Just wanted to add that my copy of Hatchard's Just After Sunset was packaged to survive a nuclear attack. I was floored at how well it was protected. Needless to say, it arrived in immaculate condition and came with some cool extras (bookmark and some advertising material).

I wonder, though, if it's really worth the investment since King didn't Hancock this edition. Looks like a nice production (I haven't opened it yet), but it's still available on Hatchard's website, so the interest obviously isn't there like it was for UtD (probably because it isn't signed, just numbered).

In any event, in the future, if it's at all possible, try to get your books shipped by Hatchards. They do it right.
