CD Artist Edition Doubleday years.

Hi guys, I'm interested in people's thoughts on the 6 book series that CD are offering. I initially bought the gift edition, then got an email saying some of the artist editions were still available. I've ended up committing to the whole set in advance, not sure if they will ever be worth more as they are basically reprints of earlier stories and they are signed by artist not King. I'm a relatively new collector, and only have a couple signed by King, but a lot of gift editions etc. not sure if they are really ever going to appreciate much. I will be eternally bitter that I had so many chances to buy IT from CD and they are now worth crazy amounts.....

I think it's another way to suck money out of collectors. It is tough financially to get all King's book, let alone all the gift editions, limited editions, signed and limited, etc. Reprints or not though, they are limited print runs. You see people selling books saying they are rare. Say it is "Just After Sunset." Well, the print run of that book is 900,000 copies of first/firsts. That's rare? lmao. But the reprints you are referring to of the 6 Cemetery Dance books will be limited print runs. I had the offer too, but I just can't keep putting things on my credit card.

Being limited print runs I would assume they will go up in value over time. However, the new artist edition of "Doctor Sleep" with red slipcase is a good example. It was 95.00 to buy, people are asking 150-300 for it, and it is not selling for those inflated prices. It has sold for what they paid for it at 95 and even 110, but that's it.

Yes it is about what people will pay for something, but books appreciate over time. My personal goal is to own every King book (good luck). And then you find out there are UK limited books, US limited, collectors editions, S/L and then your wallet is empty. So as a collector, pick and choose? I've thought about just going for the limited editions only, but they are obviously much more expensive. An example would be "Desperation." There is the normal book for like 10.00. Then there is the collectors edition for 60-75, then there is the S/L for 300-350. Do you want all 3 or just the S/L? Pick and choose or get them all, that is up to the collector and your wallet :).

As for "IT" gift edition, that is one of his best works and most famous. I am assuming that is why it has gone up in price. Two years ago I was bidding on the book and lost it. The highest bid was 150 and the seller came back to me as I was the second highest at 140. He had extra copies. So I bought it as a second chance offer. Now, it is worth 400-450 as I see it sell for that. WTF? So you just never know, but being a famous novel of his, that is the assumption as to why it sells for so much now.

P.S. I never heard of the Gunslinger before I was collecting. They have turned many of King's bad stories into bad movies, and yet nothing on "this Gunslinger series." Look those books up on pricing and you may have a stroke lol.

Thanks for that, I generally miss out on a lot of the more exclusive CD runs as I don't use a credit card anymore, they sell out so quick unless you have the cash on the spot you miss it.So, I have managed to get a few gift editions and have managed to buy a couple of signed limiteds. I didn't really start with a plan. Have just grabbed them when I can. I'm just hoping the artist editions are noticeably different and worth the extra cash. The reason I jumped on it was a few of the titles are favourites, like the stand. For once, I had the money, and I figured with the exchange rate ( I'm in Oz)and rising postage costs, who knows what they will cost by the time the run is over, I'm thinking roughly 3 years if they release one every 6 months. Anyway, I'm sure they will look great, and they are a pretty small run. I'm going to isolate a couple of other books that I really want, and focus on them next.

After 30 years of collecting signed and limited editions, I've finally learned to buy what I like (and can afford) and no longer worry about if it's going to retain or increase in value. This makes collecting more enjoyable for me, as I don't collect as a investment, but for the joy of owning books that I love. I know that doesn't really address your question, it's just an opinion I've been wanting to share after reading so much lately about the cost of the new CD books. I also went with the artist editions, but I can't imagine them increasing much in value since they aren't signed by Stephen King.

Words of wisdom deener555, words of wisdom. Buy what you like. I used to grab everything but finally got wise to it and now I buy what I like for my collection.

Personally, I think it's the healthiest and happiest way to be a collector.

Hi guys,
Im in a similar boat. I had a rush of blood and for once actually had the money to do it on the spot. In truth, I probably could have saved a fair bit and just got he gift editions. I just want nice examples of his books without taty spines and dog ears on yellowing pages. In hindsight, the money could have gone towardss one or two signed limited editions...hindsight...(:
having said that, I think they will look fantastic. Ive paid in advance so the exchange rate and postage costs arent a concern, and Im looking forward to getting a book every 6 months for a couple of years...
thanks again for everyones input..

For those who bought CARRIE from Cemetery Dance, another production update is going out today via email and it includes a link to a sneak preview of the rough pass of a piece of 'SALEM'S LOT artwork.

Knowing CD's quality, I know these books will be a success. The only reason I won't buy all six is because I already have limited editions of 'Salem's Lot, The Shining and The Stand.

I agree with the statements above, in that you should buy what you like, not what you hope will go up in value. I started with the philosophy I just want nice editions of my favourite books.

So since Carrie, Night Shift and Pet Sematery fall in to " favourite book" category, I'll pick up gift editions of those.
