custom slipcase issues/questions

Cemetary Dance had a 30% off sale recently and I took advantage of it to buy some slipcases. yesterday 2 of them arrived, and I found them very tight for the books. I had planned on putting some brodart covers on them, but I think there is no way it would fit if I did.

These were cases for Dr. Sleep and Mr. Mercedes. Anyone else feel the CD slipcases are too tight? I felt there was a risk of damaging the cover when I put them in. I have two more on order (Revival, Finders Keepers).

What about cases from others, like this site? I also would like to buy a case for my newly purchased Six Stories, and I think I read that Betts made some (although I don't see it listed on the website).

Thanks,
Mike

I didn't get the cases so I can't speak to them specifically, although it's possible they didn't size them with a brodart cover in mind. The difference between a loose slipcase vs tight can be as little as 1/8th of an inch, which can be the difference between a guy at the factory cutting on one side of the score mark vs the other when cutting the boards for the case.

My cases are also cut in batches on a machine, so there can be a little variation from batch to batch / time to time. But the case shouldn't be so tight that it would damage the DJ. I send copies of the books with brodart covers to my bindery for sizing, so you'll be fine putting brodart on any cases I offer.

Betts had cases made for six stories a couple decades ago, they're long sold out. Six stories is on my shortlist for possible next cases, once I get production caught up with this new bindery.

CD makes their cases way too tight, and I love brodart's 1.5 mil, super clear jackets with the paper attached (no perforated lines though on the paper). These are great and are really protective. CD makes tighter, great cases, but they aren't like SKCollector's as his slipcases are a tiny bit bigger to support such wraps. Basically he is a genius from the afterthought of caring for books. CD, well, what are you going to do? And yet I figured it out!!!
Brodart also sells brodart wraps that are 1.5 mil super clear plastic sheets only. They are almost the same price, I buy sets of 25. They have no paper backing, but on the bottom, the have an attached 2 inch piece of plastic. These don't cover a dust jacket 100%. The inside backing of a jacket isn't covered, but they work for ALL CD's slipcases. I spend a whole day doing all my books from CD and PS Publishing. The artist signed 3 books of Joyland from UK packed in one slipcase?....all 3 books wrapped too!

So if you need anymore info let me know. Maybe everyone here should petition SKCollector to make slipcases....for all King's book. That way, we know they would be done right. Hahahahahaha

Thanks for both your replies. So now I can buy the slipcases from this site with confidence. I will probably buy all those being sold on this site, but I'll wait until I've procured a hardcover edition of Joyland, and a 1st/1st of 'Salem's Lot.

I plan on taking all my (non-protected) SK books to a used bookstore this weekend to have them put the protection on for me. I am too lazy/clumsy. There are at least 45 books they will be doing, and this isn't counting the ones in slipcases.

So allasorte, could you post a link for ordering the wraps you mention? Perhaps I will watch them do a few, and then do the ones in slipcases myself, or take them down in a future weekend (probably about 15 of them).

Thanks,
Mike

http://www.shopbrodart.com/Book-Jacket- ... econo-fold

Brodart's site is sometimes a bit confusing, but this link was to the 25 pieces of the larger sleeves I bought for the larger CD books. They have smaller ones perfect for the PS Publishing smaller limited books they are currently listing. It was like 8.00 for 25 of them, so that is a steal in my book. But the shipping is UPS so it is high but quick delivery. I like to cover the WHOLE jacket and trim some of the wrap off if necessary as you will never see the scissor lines inside the book. You would only trim the wrap if there is excess wrapping.

The other sleeves I love are the larger just-a-fold II. I usually go 12" high and 24" long and trim if needed. They have the paper attached to the plastic and they have 3 small adhesive tabs. Easier then a hole strip of adhesive. These are for normal books without slipcases and for SKCollector slipcases. They work great. I know it gets costly to buy things like this, but to protect collective books, it is way worth it.

There are videos of how to wrap your books on youtube. I learned myself and got better at it the more I did it. I'd advise to watch a video, practice on a cheap book. The simple plastic sheets are thin, but much easier to use. The paper backing ones are a bit harder to do and timely when the jacket has been on a book for a long time. You simply place the jacket inside the wrap, rub it down flat, gently push it down inside flush to the bottom. Soon, you could charger people to do it lol!

I wonder if the new illustrated edition of Joyland will fit your case Tomas.

Yeah I wonder the same thing :) I've got one on pre-order from Amazon. I'll post as soon as I know either way.
