My book and traycase both have some discoloration. Traycase has blue that bled off the book, lightly on the bottom side. The book has the lines from the traycase along the marbled edges as well as rubbing at the rear bottom corner form the traycase. It's not real noticeable but is disappointing after paying $450. It is still a beautiful book and case and it's too bad this has to be associated with it.

Just got mine, your description is my description, but add a blue ink line on each side of the sand colored traycase..bummer. It is a beautiful book and traycase that caught the spirit of The Shining.

I need to pick my copy up from the post office on Saturday - for some reason the note says I owe $5.37 in shipping

Has anyone else seen a shipping surcharge collected by the post office on their copy of the Shining? Bill has WAY bigger headaches to deal with so I'm not going to even ask him about it, but I'm curious if any of you guys had the same thing?

It was clearly marked Book Value $450.00, but I had no extra charge.

I asked why is it sometimes I get charged and other times I don't. The gal replied. "It's all random, there are too many packages to do them all so its hit and miss."

Maybe that is just on side of our border..... and maybe I just figured out why the post losses money every year.

What a classic Government answer. There is too much so it is hit or miss. But let's raise taxes.
You can't write this stuff

This was specifically additional SHIPPING owed. Fortunatly, we don't have any sort of VAT based tax in the US, although we sure seem to have enough other taxes

I've never heard of such a thing. Postal price on mine (Media Mail) was $5.32. It was right on the shipping label.

For info:
VAT is exactly the same as sales tax in the US states. (VAT used to be called Purchase Tax).

"Sales taxes in the United States are taxes placed on the sale or lease of goods and services in the United States."

How VAT Works
VAT is assessed by governments on every part of the production chain from raw material to store shelf. Each person or company along the chain is responsible for paying the same rate of tax on their profit, although the previous taxes paid are deductible at each step. For example, someone who supplies raw materials to a manufacturer must pay 10 percent of the profit she makes. The manufacturer must then pay 10 percent of the profit he makes selling the product to a store, minus the taxes already paid by the person who supplied the raw materials. It all ends with the retailer selling the item and paying 10 percent minus what was paid in the first two stages of the process. In other words, if the VAT was 8 percent, the raw material supplier would pay 8 percent of her profits, the manufacturer would pay 8 percent of his profits minus the amount already paid and the retailer would pay 8 percent of their profit minus all that came before.

How Sales Tax Works
Sales tax is applied as a percentage of all retail sales. States, cities and other local municipalities determine what if any sales tax exists, what types of merchandise and/or services it applies to and the rates charged. In some states wholesalers who sell goods or materials within the industry to manufacturers or licensed retailers are exempt from paying sales tax. Tax is only collected on retail sales and purchases and is funded completely by the consumer. The step-by-step gradual accumulation of tax funds throughout the transformation from raw materials to finished product does not occur.
