A new edition of Salem's Lot? Keep reading

Hey folks,

I was checking my e-mail and got a quite fascinating e-mail:

============================
Hi All

I am EXCLUSIVELY announcing on behalf of Centipede Press that an additional version of their Illustrated 'Salem's Lot' is now available. It is priced at $12,000 BUT there are only two in existence - one has been kept by the binder and only this single copy is for sale.

Photos are attached and a bit of a blurb about some extras that come with it are in Jared's email below. Note that both Jared and King's office confirm to me that the proposed edition of 'The Shining' will not be proceeding, as per SK's decision.

I personally saw the book at World Horror Con in Salt Lake City two weekends ago and can tell you it is an amazing piece of work - it feels like something made by a group of monks in the 16th Century :). Jared and his people just love books!

As my personal contacts I wanted you to know about this edition before it becomes generally known.

Best - Rocky

Dear Rocky,

I have attached several photographs of Salem's Lot to this email. In addition, here is some other information I wrote up:

The deluxe leather of Salem's Lot includes a couple goodies. The book is bound in full leather with raised bands on the spine and brass clasps to keep the book closed. It has very gorgeous endsheets and has a special imitation page, different from every other edition, that was signed by King, Uelsmann, and four binders. It comes in a very heavy red-cloth bound traycase.

The book also comes with a book of interviews with Stephen King. I did a handful of copies of this book, which was originally supposed to ship with the original Centipede Press edition of Salem's Lot, but that never happened. Another extra is the prospectus of The Shining, a nice hardcover book detailing the specifics of the proposed Centipede Press edition of The Shining, written to Mr King, with original artwork by JK Potter. It is signed by JK and myself.

The package also comes with a very high resolution copy of the only letter that Stephen King sent me, a hand written piece praising the design of the book. Most of the fine details of this edition will be invisible to everyone except those interested in fine bindings. The obvious parts of the binding will be readily apparent, however.

The asking price is $12,000. Most of the price goes to the binder, who spent several years and many thousands making this book (he needs to recover the costs on his own copy -- there are only two copies in existence in this state). The binder also donated $1,000 to King's favorite charity in order to help get the signature page, so he has that cost to recoup as well. As middleman, I am taking a small portion to cover my costs: the book of interviews, the The Shining prospectus, and the handling and mailing.

I understand Justin Brooks and yourself will be documenting the physical characteristics of the book so that it is at least known to future KIng fans. Your contacts are getting first shot at the book if they want it. They should let me know immediately if this is of any interest.

Thank you again for your interest and support!!

Best Regards,

Jerad

hahaha.... yeah there is that little hurdle.

It's a little difficult to tell from the photos, but the slipcase looks a little plain for such an expensive book. Personally I'd prefer to match the case to the book. Black case, gold lettering etc.

Well, this has been a hard decision to make, but there goes little Johnny's college fund. He wasn't showing much promise in his academic pursuits anyway. Perhaps he can pay his own way with an athletic scholarship or a government grant of some kind?

Now, where is my checkbook?

 actually you might be doing him a favor... I don't think they ask for the value of your SK collection when filling out that FAFSA form for goverment aid.

I'm sure they'd want to know about 12k just sitting around in your checking account though!

Does anyone else agree that 12k might be a bit overpriced for this book?

Most definitely it's way overpriced. I would say something in the $2000 to $3000 range might be right.
